How to Transition Your Dog to Fresh Food in 7 Days

January 25, 2026 · Malika

A Gentle Guide to Switching Your Dog's Diet

Transitioning to fresh food is one of the best decisions you can make for your dog's health. But doing it gradually is key to avoiding digestive upset.

The 7-Day Transition Plan

Days 1–2: Mix 25% fresh food with 75% current food Days 3–4: Move to a 50/50 split Days 5–6: Increase to 75% fresh food, 25% old food Day 7: Switch to 100% fresh food

What to Expect

  • Days 1–3: Your dog may be more excited about meals. This is normal — fresh food smells and tastes like real food!
  • Days 3–5: Stool may temporarily soften as the gut adjusts. This is normal and usually resolves within 48 hours.
  • Days 5–7: You should start seeing firmer, smaller stools — a sign of better nutrient absorption.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  1. Serve at room temperature — cold food can be harder to digest
  2. Don't mix kibble and fresh food in the same bowl if your dog seems reluctant — serve them side by side instead
  3. Add a splash of bone broth to make the fresh food even more enticing
  4. Be patient with picky eaters — some dogs need a few days to trust new food

When to Consult Your Vet

If your dog experiences persistent diarrhea, vomiting, or refuses food for more than 24 hours, consult your veterinarian.

Most dogs transition beautifully. In fact, the most common feedback we hear is: "My dog has never eaten this enthusiastically before."
